That is possible!
Square brackets are automatically used by Clause9 for the shrinking functionality, but you can circumvent this behaviour by writing square brackets between curly brackets and quotation marks like this:
{"["}...{"]"}
Alternatively, if you want to use square brackets to designate a placeholder, you can also just use the @placeholder special function and set your References Styling to show placeholders with square brackets.
